A stakeholders meeting in the Icelandic part of MareFrame project was held last week in Reykjavík, Iceland. The meeting was held, among other things, to discuss the progress of the Icelandic case study and was a great success. Participating parties included Ministry of Industries and Innovation, Directorate of Fisheries, Icelandic Regional Development Institute, Fisheries Iceland, Association of Small Vessel Owners, Association of Fish Producers and Exporters, The Icelandic Nature Conservation Association and Iceland Sustainable Fisheries.
About the project
MareFrame seeks to implement ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management where the emphasis will be on environmental, sustainable, social and economic management, as well as focus on the cooperation of stakeholders.
Matís works together with University of Iceland and the Icelandic Marine Research Institute on the Icelandic part of the project. On the whole, MareFrame brings together 28 companies, universities and institutions from 10 European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Britain, Spain, Italy, Romania, Norway and Iceland) as well as participants from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The project has received a grant of 6 millions, which is among the highest project grants awarded in Europe.
MareFrame builds on the Icelandic fish management model including use of multi-species model “Gadget” which was developed by Icelandic project partners and is now used in many other countries.
Furthermore, the project aims to improve collaboration with those involved in fishing and fish processing as well as the fish industry and other stakeholders in the development of the fish management system as it is crucial to the implementation of the fisheries management system. Part of the MareFrame project will be to develop visual interface, video games and computer aided learning strategies to improve and bring forward results and management strategies available. This part of the project is a result of an Icelandic research.
